The IELTS test is one of the most challenging things to do. To get that high band score in just one take you need to concentrate and work hard at your IELTS test preparation, just as you did at school in your other subjects.
Not being able to reach the required band score will be costly for you in money and time because you have to take the test again and again until you reach the band score you need for your chosen career path. For those who don’t know, the IELTS test is one of the required qualifications if you plan to study, work or migrate to an English speaking country. The IELTS test is one of the most frequently chosen qualifications by students because it does not have a lot of pre-requisites and you can take it whether you are an undergraduate or a professional. But this doesn’t mean it is easy. Far from it! Academic and professionals institutions typically require a high band score, 7+, .to be reached by the candidates. This is especially true if you are going abroad to study at a university. Some countries also mandate that immigrants demonstrate language ability by using the IELTS test for additional points in their application processes. Professional organisations use the IELTS test as a language competence benchmark, especially if professionals wish to work abroad. English is the lingua franca of world business. IELTS test preparation will help you hone the techniques for how to answer the test. Remember these 7 points during your preparation for the test and you won’t be far wrong:
- IELTS test preparation is fundamental to success. Candidates should make a study plan before the exam to strengthen weaknesses and polish strengths. Assessing your study needs objectively to focus effort where it is needed will greatly help you to achieve the overall band score needed. It will also save you not only money but time and effort as well.
- Use your time wisely. Time yourself when practising for the test so that you will know how to distribute your time in the different sections. Time management is really important especially in the Writing test because you might get carried away answering task 1 and find yourself short of time to finish the other tasks.
- Practice makes perfect. Familiarising yourself with the types of questions asked is helpful. The Listening and Reading tests can be very technical because you need to write exactly what you have read or heard. Previous students have said these are the easiest parts of the test, so don’t throw away the opportunity to score well here.
- During the Listening test, read the questions first so you know what information you need to find then focus on the recording and listen carefully while recording your answers.
- For the Reading test, read the questions first, then read the passage and underline all the important things like names, dates and numbers. This way you can easily locate the answers in the paragraph. Learn how to scan and skim in the IELTS Reading Test here.
- Writing and Speaking tests are more difficult than the other tests. You need to be well prepared and well versed. It helps if you regularly read newspapers or watch local and foreign news channels. Click here to check out our IELTS writing marking and correction service.
- Finally, remember, the speaking test is a test of your communicative ability and not a formal interview. Even if you don’t know much about the topics, you can still get a high band score by speaking confidently and honestly. Be careful with your grammar and pronunciation since the examiners are very particular in these areas.
Getting a high band score in the IELTS test is not as difficult as it sounds. You just need to be well prepared and be familiar with the techniques which can help give you more thinking time. Don’t trust to luck. As Gary Player the US golf player said, “the harder I practice the luckier I get!” To your IELTS Success! James P.S. Hi, There are a lot of sites out there, that’s true. I’ve found many of them. The quality and grammatical accuracy of the model answers is often dissapointing, though, often incorrect and would hinder rather than help students hoping to achieve the higher band scores. For those seeking the lower band scores I agree there is a lot of information out there which would be useful. I do disagree with your thoughts about pronunciation, though. There are certainly students who are able to speak clearly – and these students generally do well – but there are many others who should do well but their spoken English lets them down. It is unfortunately true that we all make judgements about others based on how they look and speak. I’m just advocating that students help themselves to achieve higher band scores. Thanks for your comment, it’s good to debate some of these issues. Regards, James.
